WHO IS #SALTBAE AND WHY DO I SUDDENLY WANT A STEAK? (( post two ))

Meet Nusret Gökce, aka #SaltBae: Turkish chef and recent Internet sensation.

Despite owning Nusr-Et, a chain of six successful steakhouses across Turkey, his recent fame sparked from another outlet entirely: videos showcasing his impressive knife skills, mouthwatering culinary techniques, and sumptuous salt-sprinkling style.

The images and clips of him handily sprinkling salt on his dishes in the most over-the-top and dramatic manner has sparked an overnight Internet sensation, leading people to form their own take on the now global inside joke that is how this chef "does the most".

Whether it's his salt-scattering flair or ability to successfully pull off a white v-neck and vest, it's safe to say Gökce owes his explosive new following and extensive exposure to the power of the Internet, namely Instagram. The endless memes inspired by the chef has caused his Instagram following to expand at an extremely rapid pace, resulting in people around the dying to visit one of his restaurants, serving as a prime example of unexpected stardom.

Regardless if his online fame will continue on in translating into physical new business for this chef's various restaurants, #SaltBae will always leave us in awe and in desperate need of a steak.

  1. I watched a bunch of parody videos of this person, and I laughed a lot! I love this guy and the way to deal with the steaks and salt-scattering. I tried the salt-scatter when I grilled a steak, but it didn't make a taste of steak much better. And using hashtag as '#SaltBae' is totally a awesome idea to appeal himself in the social media world.

  2. I have never heard of him being referred to as Salt Bae before but that name cracks me up! I can't imagine the crowd lining up to see his salt-scattering magic in real life. This man really hit the jackpot, letting the internet do his marketing without lifting a finger. Well, except the ones he use to scatter the salt.

  3. I have been seeing SaltBae everywhere over the last two weeks. It is crazy how one random video of a guy sprinkling salt can lead to endless memes and even being featured on Bitmoji (yes you can become saltbae). This guy does not even realize how great of marketer he is, and all he had to do was season and cook meat. The internet is a wild place.

  5. The only time I've seen pictures of this guy is through memes, so it's interesting to hear that there is actually a background and story to accompany the mystery man. It is crazy that such a simple image as this went viral, but as you said also showcases the power of the Internet and social media platforms.

  6. I think this is a perfect example of the way marketing is going nowadays (which isn't a bad thing). This guy was just doing what he does best, became a meme, and now he has all of this essentially free marketing towards his cooking. I love seeing all of the things on Twitter about him, he deserves the fame. Great post!

  7. Haha. I honestly have never heard of this guy, but he sounds hilarious! I'm already sold, I want to visit one of his restaurants! It's festinating how advertising for local restaurants in Turkey can suddenly become global with a view viral Instagram posts.

  8. This guy is the greatest! I actually had no idea he was actually a chef/his background story at all, but the greatest memes have been created because of him. Can't wait for the next big meme trend :)
